As part of our approved OSU Covid Plan we are required to have entrants monitor their covid symptoms for 14 days before the race (starting today, Saturday, April 24). Symptoms may include: fever or chills; cough; shortness of breath; fatigue; muscle or body aches; headache; new loss of taste or smell; sore throat; congestion or runny nose; nausea or vomiting; diarrhea. In addition, you must also monitor your temperature for 7 days before the race (starting Saturday, May 1). You will sign a statement at check-in stating that you monitored your symptoms and temperature and DO NOT exhibit any of the above Covid symptoms.
Aid stations will definitely include: Hammer Heed electrolyte, water, Coke, Hammer gels, Hammer bars, prepackaged potato chips and prepackaged cookies. There may be other offerings, but no fresh fruit. There will be a drop bag at McCulloch (mile 19.8).
Cutoffs: Dimple Hill (mile 13.5) - 1:15 pm, McCulloch (mile 19.5) - 3:00 pm, Lewisburg Saddle #2 - 5:00 pm.
Latest News as of April 22, 2021
Benton County will remain in the high COVID risk level for the next two weeks beginning 4/23. This assures that we will not be in extreme risk on race day and the race will proceed as scheduled.
Below are more details on precautions and protocols that will be used for the race. Final details will be spelled out in a runner confirmation letter sent out the week of the race.
The
course was designed to minimize 2-way traffic.
There will be 5 Aid Stations with minimal offerings: Lewisburg Saddle ~ 7.8 miles, Dimple Hill ~ 13.8 miles, McCulloch Peak ~ 19.8 miles, Top of Knucklehead (water only) ~25.1 miles, and Lewisburg Saddle ~ 26.3 miles.
Packet Pickup/Start Logistics: Early packet pickup is encouraged and will be available Friday afternoon (5/7) at the Forestry Cabin in Peavy Arboretum from 3 pm to 6 pm. Check in race morning is required for all runners and will include a temperature check. If your temperature is above 100.4 F, you will not be allowed to participate. Parking signs/volunteers will direct you where to park on race morning.
Runners will start in waves based on expected pace. There will be separate registration (Forestry Cabin) and start areas (near Cronemiller Lake) to stage runners. Wave assignments will be communicated the week of the race with specific times for entry into the registration area and the start areas. Please do not enter these areas early! If you arrive and park early, please stay in your car. Waves will be based on expected pace, but considerations will be made for people that need/want to run in the same wave.
Wave 1 Start: 7:00 ~60 early starters, Wave 2 Start: 8:00 ~60 fastest starters, Wave 3 Start: 8:30 ~60 next fastest starters,
Wave 4 Start: 9:00 ~60 next fastest starters, Wave 5 Start: 9:30 ~60 next fastest starters.
Finish Logistics: Ideally, awards will be handed out as runners finish, but some may need to be delivered/mailed. Minimal food/drink will be available at the finish. Please come prepared.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Latest News as of April 8, 2021
After waiting an extra year, the 25th McDonald Forest 50K is on!
We have received conditional approval from Oregon State University (OSU), Starker Forests and Benton County and have enough volunteers to hold the race on May 8th.
The only condition from OSU is that Benton County must not be in the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) extreme risk level on race day. Benton County is currently in the OHA high risk level and has been there since March 12th.
Everyone currently on the waitlist will be moved to the entrants list.
We will follow our approved COVID plan. Race protocols from the plan will be fully communicated, highlights include: Wave starts, Waiver/temperature check at packet pick-up, Masks at start/finish, aid stations, and when passing other racers or forest users, limited options at aid stations, no spectators at start/finish.
The next runner update will be April 20th to verify Benton County risk level on race day.
We are really looking forward to giving everyone the opportunity to race in beautiful McDonald Forest!
Latest News as of March 15, 2021
What's my race registration status?
Sorry for the confusion.
If you registered before January 1, 2021 you are listed as an entrant. If you registered after January 1, 2021 you are listed on the waitlist even if you rolled over your 2020 registration.
Once we have the race permits all rolled over registrations will be put on the entrants list.
If you are on the waitlist but did not roll over a 2020 registration you are probably wondering what your chances of getting into the race are. We really cannot say for sure. The race will cap at 350 entrants. There are 75 entrants and 250 on the waitlist. There are also 44 rollover registrants that have yet to register for the 2020 race (they must do so by April 1, 2021).
Finally, no word yet from Oregon State University or Benton County.
Latest News as of March 8, 2021
As of today we are still hopeful that the 25th McDonald Forest 50K will be run on Saturday, May 8, 2021. We have submitted an event plan to the Oregon State University Department of Forestry as well as a permit application to Benton County. We are waiting for replies.
COVID-19 is impacting the race. Oregon State University’s McDonald Forest is located in Benton County, Oregon. Benton County is currently in the extreme risk level according to the Oregon Health Authority and subject to very restrictive guidance regarding gathering limits, mask usage, physical distancing, provisions for hand hygiene and enhanced cleaning protocols.
What this means to you is that masks will be required at a minimum in the parking areas, at the start/finish area, at aid stations and any time you cannot maintain a 6 foot distance from another forest user (e.g. passing). There will most likely be a staggered start for the race, aid station offerings will be limited, there will be no gathering or food at the finish and spectators will be limited.
A note regarding race registration. The race entrant cap is 350 runners. 283 entrants rolled over their 2020 registration. There are 67 spots that will be filled from the waitlist. Runners will be registered from the waitlist once our permits are approved.
We will make a final decision regarding the race by April 8,2021.
Thank you for your patience.
Latest News as of March 19, 2020
With heavy hearts, we have decided to postpone the 25th McDonald Forest 50K until May 2021. Due to cancellation of the 2020 race, current entrants can request a rollover to the 2021 race at no additional cost. If 2020 race entrants do not want a rollover to 2021, they can request a 75% refund. Please contact us if you have not already made your request.

Do you want to make ultra racing safer? By participating in a voluntary study, you can help researchers determine if there are quick and easy measurements
that can be made before, during and after ultra events that can help predict racers who may be at risk. The study will not affect you during the actual race.
You will be free to train as you normally would, and to do whatever you would normally do on race day. Your participation could help further the study and understanding
of this important area of sports medicine. For more information, contact Stacy Ramirez Pharm.D. at stacy.ramirez@oregonstate.edu.

The 50K Hall of Fame has been updated for 2008, see the
50K Hall of Fame page to see who's in line for plates and mugs.
The Results page has been updated to include links to the updated
Course Records page, and the 2007 version of the
All-Time Mac Finishers List Excel file.
We are still working on the course modifications for this year courtesy of the Trailmeister. Generally, the course will continue
to be the "Mac Light" easy and fast version that everyone loved, except for any runners over 200 pounds, who will have their own special
"Mac Heavy" course to navigate (aka the BS - Big Steve - course).
And finally, we are in the process of setting up a photo archive site at
http://macultra.smugmug.com. It's a work in progress and if you have pictures to contribute, please contact
Ken at ken.ward@hp.com.
Thanks for all your support, and please continue to direct
your questions to Scott at scott.leonard@oregonstate.edu.

The race was super fun, most people seemed to enjoy the new course and clean conditions.
We had three course records broken.
Todd Braje became the first person to ever break four hours at the Mac, smashing Tom Moritz's long-standing course record by 7 minutes.
John Ticer broke Steve Smucker's 50-59 course record by an astounding 27 minutes! And Marilyn Kovtunovich broke the 60-69 women's record. Great work you three!

We're up to 147 entrants, about 25 more than last year at this time, see the updated confirmations page. We're getting more and more fast people
and it looks like the jinx of no man or woman ever winning twice could be in jepordy this year from John Ticer, Scott Jurek, Luanne Park, Penny McDermott, or my own prediction to pull off the double, Kami Semick.
We received the shirts from Sporthill a couple of days ago, and they are a beautiful chile pepper red in a very similar lightweight fabric to last year's shirt. There's lots of nice raffle items from Sporthill as well, and other raffle items from Montrail, Hammer Gel, Dirty Girls, Vicki's Mitts, Fuel Belt, TrailRunner magazine, and massages from Meghan and Dana.

Latest News as of March 1, 2007
All registered runners are now listed on the confirmations
page. Like many ultras, we're getting significantly more entries than we had last year at this time. We may fill up!
Scott Jurek has now registered for our race. All you fast people, time to step up and take the challenge! Everyone else, enjoy Scott's great company!
The course is now fully approved by the granting agencies: OSU Research Forests, Starker Forests and the City of
Corvallis. Course descriptions, directions, mileages, elevations and maps are now available
on the course page.
The course is going to be different once again this year, of course! After the first aid station at Lewisburg Saddle, much
of the course will be run in reverse relative to recent years. You'll go up to the top of Alpha trail and descend into a short
Maze section. Then you'll resurface for the Uproute/Extendo loop, getting LB's scary aid station at the bottom. Back
into the Maze for awhile, coming out at Baker Creek for the climb up the road to the Dimple Hill aid station. Fly down
Dan's trail and up to Chip Ross aid station before climbing up Horse trail, back to the Saddle and on to the finish. One
big advantage to this direction reversal is that the aid stations are closer together near the end of the race!
The Mac 50K has several new sponsors this year, and one is the Oregon Trail Brewery in Corvallis who have given us the
opportunity to provide the runners with a commemorative 22 oz bottle of beer. As the race takes place in the OSU
Research Forest, we are not allowed to have alcoholic beverages at the cabin, or anywhere in the OSU forests. Instead,
it looks like the beer will be available for pick-up at the after race party at Ken's house. It's Ken's 50th birthday party!
So you will need to swing through Corvallis on your way home or come to the party and stay awhile. Directions will be
available in the cabin on race day. We will have a check off sheet with names and race numbers, and will not give beer
to any minors. The beer is a Porter that will be called Mac Mud Ale with a commemorative label. We hope you
enjoy it!
Other new sponsors are Dirty Girls Gaitors and
Vicki's Mitts. Please click through to all our sponsor's great
products at the bottom of the home page or on our sponsor's page. We love
our sponsors and their products!
The all-time 50K results are now available on the 50K Results page in Excel
format. Check out how many finishes your friends have, and easily compare times from year to year.
